We start from the historic canal village of Braunston. Prior to the advent of the railways, some sixty mail and stage coaches passed through Braunston each day. Goods bound for London took the canal as we are, rising through the Braunston flight of 6 locks. We need an early start the following morning to pass through the 2042 yard long Braunston Tunnel, then through scenic countryside to Napton Junction where the Leicester section of the Grand Union branches off to the north.
We head south and descend the Buckby flight of 7 locks over 1½ miles, and on towards Weedon Bec with its’ Royal Pavilion and Barracks built by George III. We take a stop to visit the Heart of the Shire Shopping village; converted farm buildings housing a variety of interesting retail outlets, antiques and crafts.
Continuing past the villages of Nether Heyford and Bugbrooke we reach the Blisworth tunnel. After an early morning start to get us through the 3076 yard tunnel we reach the charming and fascinating village of Stoke Bruerne.
A visit to the famous canal museum at Stoke Bruerne, part of this iconic canal location, is highly recommended.
Join us aboard The Billet at 2pm for sparkling wine, canapés and introductory welcome and safety chat. After settling in we will cruise at 3pm. Departure on your final day will be at 10am, after a sumptuous breakfast.
